Pages 101-107 Response

In the final six pages of Shawshank Redemption many different things have happened. First of all we learn that after many years of trying Red has finally been paroled! It is 1976 by this time and Red is living in a hotel room and working at a local grocery store just trying to survive. Secondly we learn that Red has gone to Buxton, Maine in search of the location of Andy's key not to steal it but just to have proof that Andy in fact wasn't lying. After a while of searching Red finally finds the rock and when he looks under he finds a letter addressed to him so he opens it. When he opens it he immediately recognised Andy's penmanship and continued to read the letter. The letter said something along the lines of if you are reading this you are out of prison! Do you remember that town? I could use good man to help me with my project. Your friend Andy. After Red reads the letter he packs up his possessions and violates his parole to head over to Zihuatanejo, Mexico in search of Andy.

Pages 91-101 Response

In pages 91-101 of Shawshank Redemption nothing of much significance has happened. I think that nothing of much significance has happened because we are now in the part of the novella known as the falling action. The falling action is the events that occur after the climax of the story. Pretty much all that happened in these ten pages was Red thinking of Andy and where he was at this point in time, also on September 15th, 1975 Red got a postcard from McNary, Texas. At first Red couldn't figure out who had sent it until he remembered Andy and how McNary, Texas was one of his stops on his way to Mexico. I think that in the final five pages that Red will either escape from Shawshank or be released and go and meet up with Andy in Mexico.

Pages 80-91 Response

In pages 80-91 of Shawshank Redemption two different things happen the first being of minimal significance and the second being of major significance. The first thing that happens in pages 80-91 is that Red talks about inmates escaping from Shawshank Prison. Red talks about how since he has been at Shawshank there have been many inmates that attempted to escape but only six of them being successful every year. Red also talks about one inmate by the name of Sid Nedeau. Sid Nedeau had escaped one afternoon in 1958 during the guards shift change. His escape is notorious because of how he went unnoticed. Sid was 6ft2" and wearing a prison jumpsuit. The second and final thing that happened in pages 80-91 was Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank. The who ordeal of  Andy escaping from Shawshank started on March 12th, 1975 at 6:30 a.m when all prisoners were awaken and counted before they could eat breakfast. This morning was different because one prisoner was missing. At first the guards thought that they had just miss counted because they had counted everyone the night before. The concern of the guards changed when they realised who was actually missing from their cell: Andy Dufresne. Once it was confirmed that Andy Dufresne was missing the guards were ordered to search for him and if they couldn't find him by 3:00 that afternoon they would be in gigantic trouble with the warden. The search for Andy Dufresne continued well past 3:00 and at this point the guards were angry because they had been working well past their shifts plus at this time the warden became involved in the search for Andy. It was the warden Norton a short while after that when searching Andy's cell he rips a poster off of the wall only to his horror he discovers a tunnel. Realising after that he can not fit into the tunnel and neither can most of his guards he calls upon a guard by the name of Rory Tremont who is actually able to slither through the hole in the wall. Once Rory is in the hole for quite some time he realises that he has hit the sewer line and notices that there is a pipe that has been slightly cut so he proceeds to the pipe but can only go down a few feet until he gets stuck and has to come back up. By this time warden Norton is absolutely furious not just at Andy escaping but at the guards for not keeping a closer eye on him. I think that in the next ten pages Red will plan an escape plan and eventually meet up with Andy and they will live in Mexico together as free men.

Pages 68-80 Response

In pages 68-80 of Shawshank Redemption only one thing happens but it is very big. In pages 68-80 of Shawshank Redemption Andy Dufresne explains to Reef his plans on what he plans on doing when he gets out of prison. First off Andy explains about where he plans on going and what he plans on doing. Andy explains to Red that he plans on going to a place by the name of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Andy then proceeds to explain to Red that he plans on opening up a small hotel with six cabanas on the beach and six further back, and the hotel will be catered to couples on their honeymoons not families with children. Secondly,  Red is confused on how Andy will accomplish this task when he has no money to his name so he asks him. Andy then proceeds to explain that while he was on trial his friend Jim had created a fake ID for him. This fake ID that has been created for Andy includes a Social Security card, Maine driver's licence, and a birth certificate. Also Andy Dufresne has a new name: Peter Stevens. After this Andy then proceeds to explain to Red that he has not lost all of his money and instead of loosing his money while on trial Andy's friend Jim has sold his possessions and set a bank account under the name of Peter Stevens with all taxes paid so that if Andy were ever to get out he would have money to do what he wanted to do. Andy finally explains to Red where the key to the bank account is hidden. He explains to Red that the key is hidden under a piece of black glass in a hayfield in Buxton. Also Andy explains to Red that the amount of money that he has saved in the bank account is $370,000. Red thinks that Andy is crazy for not using this money to hire an excellent lawyer to get him released. I think that in the next ten pages that Andy will become increasingly angry at the warden to the point where he demands that another re-trial be done.

Pages 58-68 Response

In pages 58-68 of Shawshank Redemption many different things happen. First of all we learn of a new inmate to Shawshank by the name of Tommy Williams. We learn that Tommy has been convicted numerous times of theft and has been incarcerated before in another prison. We also learn that Tommy has a wife and a three year old son that come to visit him often and that he becomes quite close with Andy Dufresne. Finally in pages 58-68 of Shawshank Redemption we learn that Tommy Williams is so set on helping Andy Dufresne to prove his innocence. Tommy claims that a man by the name of Elwood Blatch who he has served time with at another prison has admitted to murdering Andy's wife and her lover. Andy approached the warden with the evidence and a request for a new trial. The warden denies Andy the request of a new trial and sends Tommy Williams to a minimal security prison to prevent Andy from ever leaving Shawshank. Andy is very distraught after this incident. I think that in the next ten pages that Andy Dufresne will do something very drastic as a result of him not being able to be retried in court.

Pages 48-58 Response

In pages 48-58 of Shawshank Redemption only one main thing has happened. In pages 48-58 we learn that Andy Dufresne has become the financial wiz of the prison. Andy now manages the finances of almost all of the guards and even the warden. Andy has used his financial expertise to drastically improve the condition of the library by filling it with new and useful books to help the prisoners that will eventually be released have some hope in the future. Andy now manages most of the prison's finances and Andy's job of cleaning the laundry in the laundry room has been switched to maintaining the library. Andy has been offering to do all of these financial things for things in return. For example Andy is doing financial things for his own cell, extra protection from the guards, and beer for his friends. I think that in the next ten pages that Andy will continue to have financial success with the prison staff  and he will start to manipulate them aswell.

Pages 35-48 Response

In pages 35-48 of Shawshank Redemption many different things have happened. First of all we learn that Red has smuggled in sixty posters of Rita Hayworth to sell to make money. His first customer of the posters was Andy Dufresne. Andy and Red become pretty close after this purchase of the poster. Secondly in pages 35-48 of Shawshank Redemption Red and Andy are both assigned to fix a damaged roof. While fixing the roof Andy learns that prison guard Byron Hadley is having financial trouble even after he inherits $35,000 from a long lost brother and offers to help him out in exchange for three beers for each one of his associates. Andy being a Vice President of a bank before he was locked up is an expert on finances, and taxes. He is not believed at first until Byron Hadley realizes that Andy was actually a Vice President before he ended up here and decides to give him a chance. I think that in the next ten pages Byron Hadley will spread the news of his financial success with the help of Andy causing the other prison guards wanting Andy for themselves.
